Welcome to Mick Thill's World of Fishing

In the world of fishing, few names are more recognized than Mick Thill.  A world-class tournament Match and Ice angler, tackle designer, maker, presenter, writer, and instructor, Mick has won more competitions than can be listed here (including a remarkable 5 medals in World Championship competition, 22 National titles in USA, and England (2),  both as a fisherman on the Englands Essex Co. and American national teams, and as coach of all of USA National teams and, more recently selected by thenewly formed Chinese Fishing Federation's national team.  Mick is universally credited with bringing European-style float fishing to America in the 1970s, while also advancing traditional Old World techniques with his own, innovative float designs.  His services as a guide and instructor have been sought out by such non-fishing sports legends as Bobby Hull and Mohammed Ali, and Walter Payton while his status within the sport of fishing was cemented with his 2005 election to the American Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, WI.

And yet, for all his competitive achievements and professional accolades, Mick remains motivated by the same love of fishing he discovered as a young man, growing up in Chicago, and summering in Minong Wisconsin, then all over England, from the age of 12.

It's a lifelong passion to learn , and now pass on what so many master anglers that taught Mick, this knowledge has carried over into his groundbreaking tackle designs, and and fishing methods that he has spread to others through his outstanding Videos, TV, Radio, Magazine featuresa,writing, teaching, speaking, and coaching.

Seminar in Morton Grove IL at the Morton Grobe Fishing & Huntong Club.

Mick's recovery from his 2001 accident (which damaged his casting arm and shoulder) has been steady: "It's great that now I can cast with little pain for the 1st time in over 2 1/2 years," he says.

This is great news, especially after the disaster at the Paris World Championships following his injury where, unable to control the heavy pole, Mick destroyed two $4000 take-apart poles, several expensive sections being smashed against the concrete banks.

In other news, Mick is honored and thrilled by his recent induction into America's Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wisconsin.  As Mick put it:

"A call from Chicago Bank Angler & Chicago Carp Classic creater Ralph Grasso left me surprised.  Ralph asked if I had heard? 'OK,' I said 'I,ll bite - heard what?'                                                                               Individual & Team Win against Canada 2000

To imagine Ernest Hemingway was inducted at the same time - given how I lived in and loved Paris as Hemingway did.  Another Chicago kid who went to Paris to learn his art.  Though, of course, Hemingway went to learn to write, and mix with arts & writing giants of that day, I went for the same reason to watch, and learn from the Masters who were dominating World Champships from the 1950s 

" It was a magical time, for me as much as it was for Hemingway remembered and said in his book, it is was " A  movalble feast "

50, and 60s "
